The president of the Supreme Federal Court (STF), Edson Fachin, removed from the fake news inquiry the decision made by Alexandre de Moraes that affected André Mendonça. From now on, the analysis of this front of the crisis will be concentrated in the presidency of the Court. The move made by Fachin is interpreted as an effort to centralize crisis management in the court's leadership.
At the same time, Fachin will have to define the fate of the investigation conducted by Mendonça that involves Moraes. This investigation is at the center of the impasse between the two ministers and is the subject of internal negotiations at the Court to find a way out of the conflict.
Within the STF, one assessment is that closing the branch of the investigation targeting Moraes, currently under Mendonça's responsibility, may be one of the steps toward solving the problem. Other possibilities under consideration are redistributing part of the investigation to another minister or holding a plenary vote to define the direction of the case.
Fachin's move occurred on the same day he publicly advocated for closing the fake news inquiry itself, demonstrating an attempt to pacify the court in the face of internal tensions among the ministers.
