The Secretary-General of PS, José Luís Carneiro, today accused the Government of profiting from the increase in fuel prices. This accusation comes in the context of a political intervention in which Carneiro challenged the way the executive has been dealing with inflationary pressure on fuels.
José Luís Carneiro revealed that he submitted on Thursday, at the Assembly of the Republic, a proposal for the reduction of VAT on fuels and food. This PS initiative comes as an alternative to the measures currently in force to address the cost of living.
The proposal submitted by PS aims to ease the impact of price increases on fuels and basic food products, sectors that have registered significant inflationary pressures. The opposition party thus intends to pressure the Government to review its fiscal policy on this matter.
With this initiative, José Luís Carneiro positions PS as a party critical of the executive's energy and fiscal policy, trying to capitalize on popular discontent regarding the increase in the cost of living. The VAT reduction proposal comes at a time when opposition parties have been pressuring the Government on this issue.
