The Judicial Police detained a man outside of flagrante delicto, suspected of having set a wildfire in Solveira, in the municipality of Montalegre, on August 18. The suspect was brought before the Montalegre Court, where he was placed under the precautionary measure of weekly presentations at a police station in his area of residence.
The PJ investigation revealed that the fire was started through the use of direct flame, possibly a lighter. The man is strongly indicated as the author of the crime, which consumed approximately six thousand square meters of herbaceous and shrub vegetation.
The prompt intervention of firefighters and an air asset was crucial in containing the flames and avoiding more serious consequences. Had the fire reached greater proportions, it could have endangered the entire surrounding area, including chestnut and oak groves, as well as several houses and agricultural warehouses.
