The former mayor of the Municipality of Vila Nova de Gaia, Eduardo Vítor Rodrigues, was acquitted of the crimes of falsification, embezzlement, and misconduct of which he was accused. The case dragged on for a decade, having now been fully clarified.
According to him, ten years later it was demonstrated that all the accusations were false. Rodrigues publicly lamented the slowness of Portuguese justice, considering it unacceptable that a citizen should have to wait a decade to see their good name restored.
The case involved serious accusations of crimes against the public administration. After years of investigation and trial, the court decision confirmed the absence of any illicit behavior on the part of the former mayor.
The acquittal represents the end of a long period of uncertainty for Eduardo Vítor Rodrigues, who saw his public reputation called into question for a decade without any guilt having been demonstrated.
