Aguçadoura received young people from the Metropolitan Volunteering Academy 2026, in an initiative that involved the 17 municipalities of the Porto Metropolitan Area. The visit was part of a program developed in Póvoa de Varzim and had as its main objective to showcase one of the most emblematic practices in the agricultural history of the municipality.
For decades, seaweed marked the daily life of the coastal communities of the region. The marine plant was collected on the beaches and used as a natural fertilizer in local agriculture. The demonstration of this tradition allowed participants to understand the impact that the connection to the sea had on agriculture, on the local economy and on the way of life of the populations.
The sharing moment gained special meaning with the presence of Mr. Isolino, described as one of the last people in Aguçadoura to practice seaweed harvesting. His explanation of techniques, routines and memories associated with the activity offered the young people direct contact with knowledge passed down from generation to generation.
The session also had the participation of councilor Carina Moreira, AMP technician Isabel Veiga and the president of the Parish Council of Aguçadoura, Ricardo Campos.
