President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and the president of the Supreme Federal Court, Edson Fachin, used a ceremony at the Palácio do Planalto this Friday to send harsh messages about the unprecedented crisis at the court. Fachin stated that the response will be rigorous, but within the time that the legal order requires. Lula declared that no one can use their position for personal benefit and that he stands alongside Fachin and the Attorney General, Paulo Gonet, to convey tranquility to the population.
The crisis escalated on Thursday with a request filed by Justice Alexandre de Moraes for his colleague André Mendonça to be investigated for what he classified as evidence of crimes committed in the conduct of inquiries under his jurisdiction, especially the case of the Master scandal.
Moraes' decision came two days after Mendonça had removed the secrecy from a Federal Police report that revealed messages exchanged between Daniel Vorcaro, owner of Master bank, and Moraes himself, creating an impasse between the two justices of the court.
