The Spanish Government managed to approve a reform of the autonomous financing system, something that had been pending since 2014, when the current model expired. The vote in the Council for Fiscal and Financial Policy (CPFF) counted only with the votes in favor of Catalonia and the Canary Islands, while all other autonomous communities voted against, including two governed by the PSOE.
The new system will still have to go through the Council of Ministers and Congress before taking effect, with the Moncloa executive expecting its implementation to occur in January 2027.
The Community of Madrid, led by Díaz Ayuso, tried to organize a boycott of the CPFF meeting, but the remaining PP regions dissociated themselves from this initiative and attended the meeting to express their rejection of the proposed model.
The PP regions argue that the reform was tailor-made for Catalonia, according to them, due to pressure from Esquerra Republicana, considering that the model does not adequately address the needs of the remaining Spanish autonomous communities.
