The Israeli minister Itamar Ben-Gvir, leader of the far-right party Jewish Power (Otzma Yehudit), presented on Thursday a proposal to withdraw 1.86 million Palestinians from Gaza. The initiative, named "Disengagement 710", comes at a time of high political and military tension in the region.
Ben-Gvir, who is also Israel's National Security Minister, intends for this measure to become one of his party's main demands to participate in a future government after the Israeli elections scheduled for October 27.
The proposal aims at the transfer of the Palestinian population from Gaza, which would represent an operation of unprecedented dimensions. The plan is generating strong controversy both internationally and within the Israeli political spectrum itself.
This is not the first time a plan of this nature has emerged. Israel had already implemented a unilateral "disengagement" in 2005, when it withdrew from the Gaza Strip, evacuating Israeli settlers and military personnel from the territory. However, the new proposal goes significantly further, by foreseeing the mass departure of the local population.
