Portugal closes Mediterranean Games with 32 medals and best performance ever

The 20th edition of the Mediterranean Games ended this Thursday in Taranto, Italy, with a ceremony that brought together 25 countries over 15 days of competition. The event celebrated local culture and marked the farewell of the delegations present, including the passing of the flag to Pristina, Kosovo, the city that will host the next edition in 2030.

Team Portugal achieved its best participation ever in these games, winning 32 medals in total: 16 gold, 7 silver and 9 bronze. This result placed Portugal in 8th place in the medal table, behind Italy, Turkey, Greece, France, Egypt, Spain and Morocco.

In athletics, highlights include gold medals for Patrícia Silva in the women's 1500m, Irina Rodrigues in the discus throw, José Carlo Pinto in the men's 5000m, Omar Elkhatib in the men's 400m, the women's 4x100m relay team and Auriol Dongmo in the shot put. Swimming also contributed significantly with three golds for Camila Rebelo, two gold medals for Francisca Martins and several bronzes in individual and relay events.

Other sports that contributed to the Portuguese medal tally were canoeing, with two golds for Ana Gabriel Brito and Bruno Brasileiro, cycling with Tiago Antunes, the women's under-18 football team, judo, karate, padel, fencing, skating and rowing, thus completing the historic result of 32 medals.
