Most small islands end up solving the waste problem through landfills. However, Tilos, an island in Greece, took a different path. Euronews visited this island to learn about the implemented system and assess whether it can be replicated in other locations.
Tilos is presented as the first zero-waste island, having completely eliminated the use of landfills. The system implemented on the island is based on a waste management approach that avoids depositing waste in the soil.
The Euronews visit allowed observing directly how the island's waste management system works. The goal is to understand whether this model can be adapted and implemented in other small islands that face similar challenges in managing their waste.
