The Extremadura Health Service (SES) announced on Friday the death of an 88-year-old man, a native of Badajoz, due to West Nile fever. This death constitutes the second fatal case caused by this virus in the region during 2026.
The elderly man was admitted to Don Benito-Villanueva Hospital, located in the province of Badajoz, when he died from the mosquito-borne disease.
This new death comes after the confirmation of other cases of West Nile fever in the Extremadura region, which had already recorded a first death related to the virus. The disease, transmitted mainly through bites from infected mosquitoes, has been particularly affecting the elderly population in the area.
