The Federal Public Ministry identified 108 publications with metallic mercury advertisements on TikTok that, together, accumulated 5.8 million views. Part of the content was specifically targeted at the Brazilian public and associated the sale of the substance with mining and gold mining.
In light of the material found, the agency recommended to ByteDance Brasil, the company responsible for the platform in the country, the removal of the profiles involved in the commercialization. The MPF also requested the adoption of measures to prevent the illegal sale of the product on the social network.
Among the recommendations made by the Federal Public Ministry, the entity suggested that TikTok improve its mechanisms to identify and block advertisements of the substance. Additionally, the agency requested that the platform take action to prevent such content from being recommended or having its reach expanded by the social network's algorithm.
