The Minister of Internal Administration, Luís Neves, used a car seized by the Judicial Police. This type of use is possible through a procedure that has been customary for over 40 years.
In the last eight years, more than 100 cars and boats seized by authorities ended up being used for public purposes. This means that vehicles and vessels that were confiscated as part of criminal investigations were subsequently assigned to public services.
The procedure used by Minister Luís Neves falls within this practice established over four decades ago. This is not an exceptional situation, but rather a mechanism provided for in Portuguese legislation that allows seized goods to be repurposed for public interest purposes.
