Begoña Gómez, wife of Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, denies that she exercised "moral pressure" to obtain the chair at the Complutense University of Madrid. The defense argues that she did not influence or exert pressure on Rector Joaquín Goyache, Vice-rector Juan Carlos Droadrio, or any other authority or official.
Begoña Gómez's new lawyer, Jaime Campaner, presented the defense brief before the deadline established by Judge Juan Carlos Peinado, which ended on the following Monday. The document, to which EL PERIÓDICO had access, requests the acquittal of his client.
The trial by jury will seat Begoña Gómez in the dock for alleged crimes of influence peddling and embezzlement of public funds. The defense argues that she did not take advantage of her marital relationship with Pedro Sánchez to obtain the creation of the Extraordinary Chair at the Complutense University.
