President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva signed a law that expands access to thrombolytic medications through the Unified Health System (SUS). Thrombolytics are medications used to dissolve blood clots that can cause Acute Myocardial Infarction (AMI) and ischemic Stroke (CVA).
The new legislation aims to ensure that these medications are available more broadly in the Brazilian public health network. The objective is to facilitate emergency treatment for patients suffering from these two types of serious cardiovascular conditions.
The expanded access to thrombolytics may represent a significant improvement in mortality indicators related to heart attack and ischemic stroke, conditions that are among the leading causes of death in Brazil. The measure strengthens the SUS's capacity to handle medical emergency situations.
