SNS predicts stagnation of family doctor coverage

The SNS strategic framework document was published this Friday and presents projections for family doctor coverage until 2028. The report predicts that the percentage of users with an assigned family doctor will remain stagnant at 85.37% throughout the entire analyzed period, the same value recorded in 2024. This projection comes at a time when millions of Portuguese citizens continue without access to an assigned family doctor. The document reflects the persistent difficulties of the public health system in guaranteeing universal coverage of primary healthcare, highlighting the structural challenges that the SNS faces in attracting and retaining professionals for general and family medicine.
