Gilles Lipovetsky: "In the era of superpower, not even death is a limit"

Jornal de Negócios4 September 2026 at 11:00

French philosopher Gilles Lipovetsky launched this year in France the book "L'Odyssée de la surpuissance," where he explores the transformations of contemporary society. In the work, Lipovetsky argues that humanity has entered a new era, which he compares to a Big Bang, a deep tectonic rupture in social and individual organization.

According to the philosopher, we are living in the so-called "superpower civilization," a period characterized by unprecedented technological and scientific power. In this era, Lipovetsky highlights that not even death represents a limit anymore, referring to the growing capabilities of manipulation and intervention on human life.

The central paradox presented by Lipovetsky sustains that, paradoxically, the more power humanity acquires, the more vulnerable, fragile, and insecure both individuals and societies become. This apparent contradiction between the increase in power and the growth of insecurity is one of the central themes of his philosophical analysis.
