Argentina's President, Javier Milei, announced on Thursday sanctions against companies exploiting natural resources in the Falkland Islands and the construction of a naval base in the Tierra del Fuego province, whose territory Argentina considers to include the islands under British occupation. Milei stated that he will ban companies directly or indirectly involved in projects on the islands without Argentine authorization, and that he will send a bill to Parliament to toughen penalties against these companies, which will not be able to operate in Argentine continental territory.
The head of state referred specifically to the consortium formed by the Israeli company Navitas, with 65%, and the British company Rockhopper, with 35%, for crude oil extraction on the islands, warning that within a few months these companies could appropriate the oil reserves under the Argentine sea. Argentina has already imposed sanctions on Rockhopper in 2013 and on Navitas in 2022. Other companies such as the British Borders & Southern and the Canadian JHI also hold oil exploration licenses in the archipelago.
Milei stated that the sanctions will also apply to other activities in the Falklands, whose economy is based on fishing, cruise tourism, and sheep farming. The bill he will present will also create a National Security Council for the protection of critical infrastructure and aerospace and maritime protection of the country. Milei argued that "a poor country without Armed Forces will hardly be able to effectively advance its sovereign claims."
The Argentine President also referred to Donald Trump's recent statements, in which he said he was willing to review Washington's neutrality position in the dispute between Argentina and the United Kingdom, considering that "the United States is considering this change of position because they know they have a trusted partner in Argentina." Milei also considered that the United Kingdom faces "multiple crises" and is "on a path of decline," while "Argentina's future is prosperous and will prevail."
