The PS founder, António de Almeida-Santos, criticizes the concentration of political discussion in the media in the metropolitan areas of Lisbon and Porto, which represent only 5% of the territory but concentrate about 50% of the population and national wealth. The author considers the discussion about housing, transport and quality of life in these urban spaces pathetic, while 70% of the national territory faces accelerated desertification and is transforming into a "monumental nursing home for the elderly."
The article warns of the lack of a political project to support small cities in the interior, considering that higher education was the only factor that saved cities such as Bragança, Vila Real, Covilhã and Évora from degradation. The author criticizes that the increase in higher education slots was mainly made in Lisbon and Porto, instead of in areas where there are no housing, transport or quality of life problems.
In the second part of the article, the author addresses the need to adapt agriculture to climate change, which will cause more frequent heat waves, droughts and floods in the Iberian Peninsula. He argues that solar panels, placed at about 4 meters height to allow the circulation of agricultural machinery, can be of great help in minimizing climate impacts on farms, increasing productivity in vineyards, small fruits, vegetables and pastures.
The author warns that Portugal already depends more than 70% on foreign food products and calls for a policy to preserve soils, considering it urgent to reduce this extremely dangerous external dependence while simultaneously increasing solar energy production, in a context of explosive world political situation and profound climate changes.
