Rock in Rio begins this Friday (4th) in the city of Rio de Janeiro, starting a season of concerts and festivals where sound systems can reach between 100 and 120 decibels. These high sound intensity levels make hearing protection a relevant measure for those attending large-scale music events.
International health standards establish that the maximum recommended level for continuous exposure of eight hours is 85 decibels. When sound reaches 100 decibels, the exposure period without protection is reduced to just about 15 minutes, while at even higher intensities, such as those reaching 120 decibels, the considered safe time is even shorter.
The risk is especially relevant among the young population. According to data from the World Health Organization (WHO) cited in the article, over 1.1 billion people between 12 and 35 years old are at risk of suffering hearing loss due to unsafe listening practices, including prolonged exposure to high sound levels at cultural and entertainment events.
