Director of charity institution detained in Russia for 2023 post criticizing army

A Russian court imposed on Thursday a curfew and a communications block on the founder of a Moscow charity that provides palliative care to children and young adults. Lida Moniava, 38, was arrested on Wednesday on charges of spreading "false information" about the Russian army.

The accusation refers to a post made in 2023 on a social media platform that alluded to the high civilian casualties in the Ukraine war. The Moscow court ordered her to be placed under judicial supervision, banning her from leaving home from 8pm to 8am, from using the internet, or from speaking with witnesses in the case.

The arrest occurs amid Moscow's crackdown on critics of its offensive in Ukraine, which has already led to the imprisonment of numerous people who expressed opinions against the war or the Russian army.
