Brazil says there was lack of dialogue and admits reciprocity if EU maintains restrictions on meat

dnoticias.pt4 September 2026 at 03:00

The Brazilian Government stated that there was a lack of prior dialogue with the European Union before the restrictions on animal protein products. The position is contained in a joint note from the Ministries of Foreign Affairs and Agriculture and Livestock, released on the day the European restrictions based on rules on the use of antimicrobials came into effect.

According to the Brazilian Executive, since the European decision to impose the restrictions, the country may apply reciprocity measures if a satisfactory solution is not found for the issue. The reciprocity warning comes as a response to the trade barriers imposed by the EU.

The European restrictions came into effect on the same day the Brazilian Government issued the joint note. The EU measure is based on rules related to the use of antimicrobials in the production of animal protein destined for the European market.

Brazil expressed dissatisfaction with the lack of prior consultation by the European bloc before the implementation of the new rules. The Executive awaits possible negotiations to resolve the trade dispute, keeping the possibility of retaliation open should the talks not progress in a satisfactory manner.
