Netherlands withdraws gold reserves from USA and Canada due to "geopolitical instability"

Correio da Manhã4 September 2026 at 01:30

The Netherlands withdrew its gold reserves stored in the United States and Canada, transferring them to the United Kingdom. The operation involved 86 tonnes of gold and was carried out secretly between March and August this year. The Central Bank of the Netherlands justified the transfer with concerns over growing "geopolitical instability". The Netherlands' gold reserves were distributed across three locations until now: the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom. This transfer marks a significant change in the country's strategy for storing its gold reserves, now concentrating a substantial part of its assets in the United Kingdom.
