President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) called Senate President Davi Alcolumbre (União Brasil-AP) on Wednesday to try to unblock the vote on the Constitutional Amendment Proposal (PEC) that proposes ending the 6x1 work schedule. According to reports from three people familiar with the conversations, the leftist leader reached out to Alcolumbre after the PEC's approval in the Constitution and Justice Committee (CCJ) and asked for the proposal to be brought to the floor.
During the call, Lula thanked Alcolumbre for the approval in the CCJ of the PEC to end the 6x1 schedule and for other matters that advanced in the Senate this week that were considered priorities for the Planning Palace, such as the Public Security PEC, the rare earth projects, and the one that creates incentives for datacenters.
Despite Lula's request, the vote on the PEC to end the 6x1 schedule was not held on the Senate floor. It is the Senate president's prerogative to schedule the topics that will be analyzed on the floor, and Alcolumbre chose not to conclude the vote on the issue this week.
Alcolumbre's decision frustrated the expectations of Lula's allies, who were working for the approval of the proposal during this legislative period. The PEC proposes changes to the work schedule and has mobilized supporters who advocate for the elimination of the 6x1 schedule.
