TRE-MG bars Eduardo Cunha's candidacy for federal deputy

oglobo3 September 2026 at 22:55

The Regional Electoral Court of Minas Gerais decided to invalidate the candidacy of former President of the Chamber of Deputies Eduardo Cunha for the position of Federal Deputy for the state. The decision was unanimous, with a 6-0 vote, following the opinion issued by the Electoral Public Ministry.

Eduardo Cunha was attempting to be elected again to the Chamber of Deputies after having his mandate revoked in 2016. He was affiliated with the Republicanos party for the upcoming elections this year.

The Minas Gerais Electoral Court followed the recommendation of the Federal Public Ministry in deciding to invalidate the candidacy. The former deputy can still appeal the decision to the Superior Electoral Court.
