Messages included by the Federal Police in the report that resulted in the latest of three recent operations against Cláudio Castro (PL), former governor of Rio, reveal that he considered businessman Ricardo Magro, owner of Refit, a "friend." According to the PF, the relationship between the then head of Guanabara Palace and the man known as the country's largest tax debtor was not limited to the professional sphere and produced benefits for the refinery.
Castro and Magro were targets of a first operation on the case in May. The former governor underwent search and seizure, while the businessman, who had a detention order determined by the Supreme Federal Court (STF), was not located and is considered a fugitive.
After an event in New York that both attended last year, Castro sent a message to Magro reaffirming the friendship between them. The PF is investigating whether the proximity between the politician and the businessman resulted in undue advantages for the Refit refinery.
