'Avante!' 50 years of the Festival that attracts young people to an aging PCP

SAPO Notícias3 September 2026 at 22:07

The "Festa do Avante!" celebrates its 50th anniversary this year, taking place on September 4, 5, and 6. This annual festival of the Portuguese Communist Party takes place in Atalaia, in Azambuja, and is one of the most long-lasting political events in Portugal.

The PCP is described in the article as a party that is electorally smaller and sociologically more aged, but that maintains the capacity to mobilize thousands of people and attract young people to the Festival. This apparent contradiction is at the center of the reflection the article proposes.

Paulo Raimundo's trajectory is presented as an example of the phenomenon the Festival aims to promote. Raimundo initially came to the "Festa do Avante!" through music, before joining the JCP (Portuguese Communist Youth), the party's youth organization.

The article thus raises the central question about what is at stake: to what extent does Atalaia continue to be capable of transforming young people's attraction to the event into active militancy and militancy into party renewal.
