The Cristo Redentor was illuminated in gold in Rio de Janeiro at the opening of Golden September 2026, a campaign to raise awareness about childhood and adolescent cancer. The ceremony took place from 6 PM to 7:30 PM and was dedicated to children and adolescents undergoing oncological treatment, their family members, and the healthcare professionals working in the field.
The opening of the campaign brought together the Cristo Redentor Sanctuary, Oncoped, and Oncocipe. The theme adopted this year is "Childhood cancer has challenges, but it also has a cure," with the additional concept "Changing the script is in our hands." The programming will use film references to raise awareness about the signs of the disease and guide medical evaluation.
Childhood and adolescent cancer is rare compared to tumors in adults and has its own characteristics, but it has high chances of cure when diagnosed and treated appropriately and in a timely manner. The Niterói mobilization group, which began its activities in 2018, is focusing this year on identifying symptoms that warrant investigation and facilitating access to specialized care.
