The Foreign Ministers of Germany, France and Poland, members of the Weimar Triangle, warned today that they will respond to the increase in Russian aggression against Europe, in the context of an intensification of the war in Ukraine. German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul declared at the end of a meeting in Weimar that "there will be consequences" for incidents such as the failed explosive drone attack at Leipzig airport, which Berlin attributed to Moscow.
The head of French diplomacy, Jean-Noel Barrot, warned that Europe will respond to acts that threaten the territorial integrity of the EU, NATO territory or electoral processes, emphasizing that "Europe is the victim of renewed aggression from Russia since 24 February 2022". Barrot also urged the separation of the Kremlin from the Russian people, stating that the latter "is suffering from Putin's imperialist and colonial decisions".
Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski expressed Poland's support for Germany and stated that "Putin's Russia is one of the most significant threats to peace in Europe", adding that this type of terrorism is a problem for the entire NATO. On Tuesday, Germany announced retaliatory measures against Russia, after accusing it of sending a drone loaded with explosives to Leipzig airport in early August, a key military hub for the German army and for NATO.
The drone was discovered in the secure cargo operations area, near several Ukrainian cargo aircraft, and a second drone struck a DHL cargo plane minutes later. A third drone was subsequently found at the airport with traces of explosive substances. Since the beginning of the war in Ukraine, Germany and several other European states have regularly attributed destabilization, espionage and sabotage operations on their territories to the Kremlin.
