Wrong classification? Understand why Mirassol, and not Vasco, is in the Brasileirão relegation zone

Mirassol's 2-0 defeat to Flamengo created a rare situation at the bottom of the Brazilian Championship table. The result left the São Paulo team strictly tied with Vasco on all tiebreaker criteria: both have 25 points, six wins, a negative goal difference of 12, and 27 goals scored. By head-to-head record, Mirassol would have the advantage, having beaten Vasco 2-1 in the first leg and drawn 1-1 at São Januário. Different tables kept Mirassol in 16th place and placed Vasco in 17th, but the official standings present the reverse order.

The explanation lies in Article 15 of the Specific Regulations of the Brasileirão. The order of tiebreaker criteria is as follows: most wins, best goal difference, most goals scored, head-to-head record, fewest red cards, fewest yellow cards, and finally, a draw. Since Mirassol and Vasco are tied on the first three criteria, the regulations determine that the fourth criterion, which is the head-to-head record, should be applied.
