Nurses will now directly participate in the handling and triage of calls referred to SNS 24, according to a new model being implemented. This change aims to strengthen the clinical assessment of users who contact the Portuguese health line, guaranteeing a more qualified response from the first contact.
The integration of nurses into the system aims to optimize available resources at the Emergency Patient Guidance Centres (CODU), allowing for more efficient and targeted triage. In this way, nursing professionals take on a more active role in telephone triage, complementing the existing work.
This new operational model comes in the context of a growing need for response from SNS 24, which has been facing a significant increase in call volume. The participation of nurses aims to improve the quality of service and ensure that the most urgent cases are identified and referred more quickly.
