The entry of 80,000 people into Ceuta coming from Morocco last July activated alarms at the National Police in the Canary Islands. The National Immigration and Borders Center (CENIF) issued two alerts specifically directed at the Archipelago.
The first alert was issued on July 31, during the massive entry of people through the Ceuta border, and reached the Superior Police Headquarters of the Canary Islands due to the risk of an increase in arrivals of irregular vessels to the island coasts.
The second alert was issued on August 4 and was directed to the Superior Police Headquarters of Ceuta, Melilla, the Canary Islands, Eastern Andalusia and Western Andalusia.
The police report on Ceuta thus reveals that the Spanish authorities anticipated the possibility of a migratory rebound to the Canary Islands after the crisis at the land border with Morocco.
