The Chinese Ministry of Commerce today demanded that France "immediately" suspend the penalties applied since this month to the so-called "ultra-fast fashion," which range between 0.5 and 12 euros per item sold.
The punitive measures affect Chinese e-commerce platforms operating in the French market, including Shein and Temu, known for selling clothing and accessories at very low prices with fast deliveries.
The Chinese demand comes in the context of growing trade tensions between China and various Western countries, which have implemented measures to limit the entry of cheap products, especially from the textile sector, into their domestic markets.
Chinese authorities consider the French fees discriminatory and have asked the French government to reverse the decision, potentially threatening trade retaliations if the measure is not overturned.
