Historic: Varzim with best season start in 60 years

Mais Semanário3 September 2026 at 12:42

Varzim under Carlos Fernandes is experiencing a historic start to the season for the club. With four consecutive victories, the black-and-whites have achieved a start not seen in six decades, since the 1960s. This winning streak includes victories against Trofense (0-1), Marco 09 (2-1), Paços de Ferreira (1-4), and a 5-1 rout over Trofense in the Portuguese Cup.

The 5-1 victory, witnessed by 3,768 fans, was particularly meaningful. Despite conceding an own goal at 10 minutes, the team responded with authority, turning the match around with goals from Pedro Matos (two), Valentim Sousa, Francisco Silva, and Diogo Rebelo.

The last time Varzim achieved a start of four consecutive victories was in the 1960s, when it competed in the National First Division. This repetition of the feat, six decades later, reinforces the symbolic weight of this winning streak and brings hope back to Varzim fans.

The next challenge comes this Saturday at 6:30 PM, with a home game against Paredes, second-placed in Series A of Liga 3. The game can redefine the race for the top spots, with the Poveiro side looking to extend their winning streak and defend their lead in the fourth round of Liga 3.
