Japan to tighten driving tests for drivers over 75

Japan will tighten driving tests for people over 75, the Japanese police announced. The measure will be specifically targeted at elderly drivers with a history of traffic violations, as a response to the increase in fatal accidents caused by driving errors in this age group.

The country faces a particularly pronounced aging of the population, which has been directly reflected in traffic accident statistics. Last year, approximately 18% of the 2,500 traffic accidents recorded were caused by drivers aged 75 or over, according to data from the National Police Agency (NPA).

According to an agency report, many accidents are caused by elderly drivers who mistakenly step on the accelerator instead of the brake. Fatal accidents are more frequent among elderly people who already have a history of traffic violations, which justifies the focus of the new policy on this specific group.
