Bosnia's all-time top scorer, Džeko announces retirement from national team at age 40

Edin Džeko, the all-time top scorer in the history of Bosnia and Herzegovina, announced his retirement from the national team at age 40. The forward will make his last appearance for the team on October 2, against Sweden, in the Nations League. The farewell will be in front of the Bosnian fans, before the team faces Poland three days later.

Džeko began his career with the national team in 2007, completing nearly two decades of service to the selection. Captain and the main reference of the Bosnian generation, he has 162 appearances and 73 goals for the country, numbers that make him the record holder for both appearances and goals for the national team.

The forward announced the decision in a long message published on social media. In the post, Džeko said he had imagined many times what the moment of farewell would be like, but admitted that facing it was harder than he expected. He declared that nothing in his career equaled the pride he felt every time he wore the national team jersey.
