In the last hours of yesterday, southern mainland Portugal recorded the entry of a "tongue" of Saharan dust, which is expected to expand to the entire national territory in the coming hours. However, the concentration of these particles should be low during today.
The intensification of Saharan dust concentration is forecast for tomorrow, Friday, and is expected to remain so at least until the beginning of next week. The phenomenon affects the entire Portuguese mainland territory.
The arrival of this dust plume is associated with an anticyclonic ridge extending from the Atlantic and North Africa to Central Europe. This atmospheric configuration favors the transport of dust to higher latitudes.
In addition to dust transport, this associated warm air mass also contributes to the intensification of heat in mainland Portugal.
