The United States imposed on Thursday new customs tariffs of up to 100% on drones and respective components, in a measure that took immediate effect. This decision represents a significant increase compared to previously applied rates and aims to create a substantial trade barrier against imports of unmanned aerial vehicles.
The main objective of this measure is to reduce American dependence on Chinese suppliers, who largely dominate the global market for commercial and consumer drones. The company DJI, based in Shenzhen, is pointed out as the undisputed leader of this sector, occupying a market position that American authorities consider strategic and vulnerable.
The American administration argues that the concentration of drone production in Chinese suppliers represents national security and economic risks. The new tariffs aim to encourage the transfer of production to American manufacturers or those from allied countries, thereby strengthening the domestic supply chain for drone technology.
This decision is part of a broader trend of increased tariffs on Chinese products by the United States, in a strategy that aims to counter what Washington considers China's unfair trade practices. Analysts point out that the measure could have significant impacts on drone prices for American consumers and businesses, at least in the short term, while the market adjusts to the new trade conditions.
