Rangel does not anticipate new EU measures on West Bank until elections in Israel

dnoticias.pt3 September 2026 at 03:17

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Paulo Rangel, indicated that it is not expected that the European Union will approve new measures on settlements in the West Bank before the Israeli elections in October. This position was expressed at the end of an informal meeting of EU foreign ministers, held in Wicklow, Ireland.

Rangel highlighted that Portugal does not agree with the criterion of postponing decisions on settlements until after the Israeli elections, demonstrating a differentiated position regarding the approach of most European countries.

The government official reiterated that Portugal is in favor of suspending trade with settlements in the West Bank, aligning itself with the position of other member states that want stronger EU action against Israeli settlements.
