Actor Leonardo DiCaprio officially met with President Lula on Wednesday (2), concluding a nearly week-long trip to Brazil. The meeting was attended by First Lady Janja and ministers João Capibanco (Environment), Eloy Terena (Indigenous Peoples), and Margareth Menezes (Culture).
In the six previous days, DiCaprio visited Chief Raoni, a character in a documentary in final production, as well as projects and communities in the Amazon, Cerrado, and Pantanal supported by Re:Wild, his international environmental NGO.
Brazil is a priority country in the program recently launched by DiCaprio and Jeff Bezos, which plans approximately R$1 billion for the rescue of threatened species. According to the Re:Wild team, five of these species are found exclusively in Brazilian forests.
According to the Re:Wild team, the meeting with Lula served to discuss the importance of protecting Brazil's ecosystems, biodiversity, and indigenous territories, as well as guaranteeing the rights of indigenous peoples. A month ago, Re:Wild and the Bezos Earth Fund had launched the program in partnership.
