SAPO Notícias2 September 2026 at 22:49

The Memorial to the victims of the Glória Elevator accident will be inaugurated this Thursday, exactly one year after the derailment that caused 16 deaths and 24 injured. The memorial is located at Largo da Oliveirinha.

The space is composed of a 150-year-old olive tree and 16 limestone blocks, representing each of the fatalities from the accident. The victims were of 15 different nationalities.

The Glória Elevator, which connects the Baixa to the Alta of Lisbon, derailed on March 3, 2024, causing the greatest tragedy ever recorded in public transportation in Portugal. The accident occurred when the cabin veered off course during the descent.

The causes of the accident continue to be investigated by the competent authorities, who are attempting to determine responsibility for the derailment of the historic funicular elevator of the Portuguese capital.
