The prosecution claims that Joshua Wong and another individual identified as Law began years ago an international lobbying campaign aimed at self-determination and democracy for Hong Kong. The lobbying activities would have started even before the major anti-government protests of 2019 that shook the territory.
The case falls within the context of the national security law imposed by Beijing in Hong Kong in 2020, which criminalizes secessionism, subversion, terrorism, and collusion with foreign forces. Since then, several pro-democracy figures have been prosecuted and imprisoned under this legislation.
