Landscape architects reject kaolin mine in Peniche

Observador1 September 2026 at 23:12

Landscape architects issued a negative opinion on a kaolin extraction project in Peniche, rejecting the initiative. The technical opinion highlights concerns about the environmental impact of the proposed mine.

According to the article, 471 of the 662 cork oaks inventoried in the affected area will be cut down, representing a significant loss of trees. This decision raises questions about the environmental sustainability of the project.

The presented recovery plan does not include planting any cork oak to compensate for those that will be eliminated. This absence of compensatory measure was one of the points criticized by the landscape architects in their opinion.

The public consultation of the Environmental Impact Assessment ended on a Tuesday, marking the end of the period during which interested parties could submit their opinions on the project.
