With Plata's return, Flamengo exceeds foreign player limit in Brasileirão; find out what happens

extra1 September 2026 at 22:14

Flamengo announced on Tuesday the return of Ecuadorian striker Gonzalo Plata. The player had already said goodbye to the club and traveled to Moscow, but his signing by Dynamo was not completed. According to the red-and-black club, Plata did not meet the medical parameters required by the Russian team, which led to the termination of the agreement and his return to Rio de Janeiro.

With Plata's reintegration, Flamengo now has ten foreign players on its squad. The situation puts the club above the limit established by the CBF for the Brazilian Championship, which allows the registration of only nine foreign athletes per match. The rule was defined by the participating clubs themselves.

The ten foreigners at Flamengo are: Agustín Rossi (goalkeeper, Argentina), Guillermo Varela (fullback, Uruguay), Erick Pulver (midfielder, Chile), De La Cruz (midfielder, Uruguay), Saúl Ñiguez (midfielder, Spain), De Arrascaeta (midfielder, Uruguay), Carrascal (attacking midfielder, Colombia), Gonzalo Plata (forward, Ecuador), Anthony Valencia (forward, Ecuador) and Joaquín Freitas (forward, Argentina). The lineup includes players from six different nationalities, with a predominance of Uruguayan and Ecuadorian athletes.

The club bet on continuity for a season of maximum demand. Pape Gueye was for most of the summer the name most associated with a possible important departure, but as the weeks passed, his continuity was practically assured.

This article uses Argentine footballer Julián Álvarez, who left Manchester City for Atlético de Madrid, as a metaphor for the common worker who dreams of escaping routine and daily monotony. The text reflects on how we all wish we had a "transfer" that would take us away from work stress to enjoy moments of leisure, comparing the desire for freedom with the attractiveness of Barça's play under Hansi Flick.
