Iran has expressed interest in restoring a ceasefire agreement with the United States, according to sources cited by Reuters. The framework agreement in question had been reached in June and provided for an immediate ceasefire, simultaneously opening a 60-day period for negotiations aimed at achieving a broader peace understanding.
However, there are two Iranian demands that should hinder any progress in the negotiations. Iran demands guarantees that the United States will not withdraw from the agreement again, and also wants Washington to lift sanctions imposed on the country even before any formal commitment is sealed.
The indirect talks between Tehran and Washington lasted for months, with Oman and [text unclear] as mediators. The June agreement was reportedly closer to an understanding than any other reached in recent years, although it ultimately failed to materialize.
The US administration has not yet officially commented on this information. Analysts point out that the Iranian demands represent a significant challenge, given the persistent skepticism in Washington regarding agreements with Iran and the internal political implications in the US.
