"This is the right moment": Keir Starmer announces departure from Parliament

Expresso1 September 2026 at 15:39

Keir Starmer, former British prime minister, announced he will leave Parliament. In a public statement, Starmer said "it is the right moment" to leave the legislative position, ending his career as a parliamentarian after several terms.

After leaving Parliament, Starmer intends to dedicate himself to international issues. The former Labour leader did not specify exactly what kind of international work he intends to pursue, but indicated that this is the direction he wants to follow after leaving British domestic politics.

The seat Starmer leaves vacant in the House of Commons will trigger a by-election. Predictions indicate that the contest for the seat will be between the Labour Party, to which Starmer always belonged, and the Green Party.

Starmer was prime minister of the United Kingdom until recently, having led the country during a period of significant political and economic challenges. His departure from Parliament marks the end of an era for the Labour Party and opens the way for a new political dynamic in his former constituency.

Government admits problems with the Volta System and says solutions are being found

The Minister of Environment, Maria da Graça Carvalho, admitted in Brussels that the Volta System, which came into operation in Portugal in April 2026, has presented problems in its implementation, particularly related to the disposal of packaging on public roads and with people searching through trash to obtain the reimbursement of 10 cents per packaging. The minister highlighted that all identified problems are being analyzed and resolved on a case-by-case basis, emphasizing that all European countries that implemented this deposit and refund system experienced initial disruptions. Among the measures under study are the placement of proper containers near disposal locations, meetings with the hospitality and restaurant sector, and reinforced inspection shared between SDR Portugal and the municipalities, in addition to increasing the number of collection machines.
