Portugal celebrates today the 130 years of the first national oceanographic campaign, a historic expedition led by King D. Carlos. This anniversary is marked with the beginning of a new research mission off Oeiras.
The current campaign aims to monitor the impact of human activity on marine ecosystems. This is the first oceanographic campaign of the year, carried out within the framework of continuous marine scientific research efforts in Portuguese waters.
The link between the historical celebration and the contemporary mission demonstrates the continuity of the oceanographic research tradition in Portugal, started exactly 130 years ago by King D. Carlos, who was a central figure in Portuguese science of the 19th century.
