Portugal spent more than 10% of public expenditure on education in 2024, positioning itself above the European Union average for this indicator. This proportion represents a significant milestone for the country in terms of investment in the education sector.
The historical evolution shows a variation over the past years. In 2019, Portugal spent 10.5% of public expenditure on education. This value dropped to 9.6% in 2020, possibly affected by extraordinary circumstances. From there, a gradual recovery was observed, with 9.9% in 2021, 10.1% in 2022, 10.2% in 2023 and 10.3% in 2024.
