The Socialist Party challenged Chega to approve the creation of a Defense subcommittee to oversee the largest ever military purchases in Portugal. The socialists consider this would be an opportunity for the right-wing party to demonstrate consistency between its discourse and action.
PS deputies once again accused the Government and the Minister of National Defense, Nuno Melo, of lack of transparency regarding military purchases made under the SAFE program. This is not the first time the socialists have raised this issue.
The SAFE program represents the largest ever investments in the defense sector in Portugal, which makes rigorous parliamentary oversight essential. PS believes a Defense subcommittee would be the appropriate instrument to ensure this supervision.
The socialists called on Chega to be consistent with its previous critical positions and vote in favor of creating this subcommittee, thus allowing better democratic control over these multi-million dollar investments in national defense.
