The President of the Republic of Mozambique, Daniel Chapo, reversed his decision to appoint Waldemar Fernando de Sousa as governor of the Bank of Mozambique and appointed Felisberto Navalha to the position, in an order issued less than 24 hours after the initial announcement.
Waldemar Fernando de Sousa, a former administrator of the institution, was supposed to succeed Rogério Zandamela, who served two terms at the central bank. Felisberto Navalha had initially been chosen for the vice-presidency, a position that will now be held by Benedita Maria Guimino.
The inauguration was scheduled for the early hours of this Tuesday. The reversal occurred shortly after Daniel Chapo met with the Secretary-General of the Socialist Party, José Luís Carneiro, and the president of the PS parliamentary group, Eurico Brilhante Dias.
The Presidency clarified that the President revoked the two previous orders "due to supervening issues," appointing Felisberto Dinis Navalha as governor of the Bank of Mozambique, pursuant to paragraph c) of number 2 of article 159 of the Constitution of the Republic.
